Get Paid to Write | Tagline generation

10th March, 2010 - Posted by admin - 10 Comments

Here’s one way you can get paid to write: help a client come up with a business name, product name, or tagline.

I haven’t done a ton of this, but it’s kind of fun… a little like playing Boggle or something!

Part of the process is brainstorming.

I just found a free tool that helps a little – it’s a word association generator. You just type in a word and you’ll get a long list of words people associate with that original term. Sometimes you get a long list… sometimes you get nothing!

Check it out and see what you think:

http://www.eat.rl.ac.uk/

Now… here’s where it gets interesting!

As you know, I’m about to open the doors on a 3-month mini-course… essentially teaching you HOW to do six of the most common (well-paid!) writing projects out there.

One problem… this course is still nameless.

So, how about you help me name it?

Here’s what we’re going to cover:

You’ll get everything I know about writing:

* SEO articles
* press releases
* website copy
* ebooks
* blog posts
* and sales letters.

You’ll get:

* step-by-step how-to’s so even your first project comes out looking like you’ve been doing this for years (study at your own pace)
* all the mistakes to avoid
* add-on services you can provide your clients (a win for both of you – they get more, you get paid more!)
* my proposal template for each of these projects (use it to create your own)
* my pricing for each project
* ideas on where to find clients who will pay well for these gigs
* a monthly LIVE Q&A call
* an MP3 of that call in case you miss it
* the opportunity to get and give feedback from other writers (PRICELESS!) on your samples
* book recommendations to help you move forward with total confidence

So, here’s the deal…

Submit your best ideas to name this baby – and if I use your idea… you get in FREE.

Just leave your ideas as comments. I’ll choose something in the next week or so.

This is a fun challenge… Time to put the marketing hat back on.

Here’s the thing …

It seems to me, it *doesn’t really matter* how you name the course … as long as:

a) the name suggest a desirable benefit AND doesn’t sound like too much work (a “Mini-course” comes across so much sweeter than a “Comprehensive Program”) and…

b) the Subhead clearly spells out the benefits to the user.

Allow me to explain…

Let’s take,for example, your awesome book:

“Working Writer, Happy Writer

How To Build a Thriving Writing Business from NOTHING”

The name “Working Writer, Happy Writer,” albeit a very clever benefit proposition, could have been different:

- Get Paid To Write
- Stay At Home Mom’s Simple Writing Primer
- EZ FastStart Writing Manual

And yet it wouldn’t much matter, because you “sell it” with the benefit laden subhead that drives the message clearly home:

– How To Build a Thriving Writing Business from NOTHING…

Same applies to the naming of your Mini-Course — it can be anything, given the subhead that delivers the right message to the right ears.

So, then, what is the message and who is it for?

Reading though you course benefits, I get a firm impression that the course is targeted, rather than at the complete beginners, who want everything spelled out to them (and your book does the job marvelously)

… more at people who have already read your book, know the general theory, want to start writing, but nevertheless hesitate to start.

What hinders them?

- Not knowing where to start and what to do next.

- The lack of confidence in own skills.

- The terror of being accused in incompetence, humiliated and ridiculed.

(You’ve nailed the major pain button — “… so even your first project comes out looking like you’ve been doing this for years.”)

And I feel, your course is squarely positioned to address this audience.

In essence you’re offering to take them by the hand and walk them through the indecision and hesitation by showing how easy one can become a confident writer by following your simple “paint-by-the-dot” formulas.

And the subhead, then, has to manifest the following major benefits:

• We take you by the hand and walk you step-by-step — it’s easy and simple, you’ll be able to follow along and you’ll get results fast.

• There’s nothing to figure out — we show you everything there’s to know to breeze through any typical assignment. You will feel the confidence of knowing what to do and how to do it.

• And you’ll feel competent you CAN come across as a seasoned pro … and this will help you to break through your hesitation to start writing for clients.

The Mini-Course name itself is not about writing per-se, or making money writing online.
It’s more about *finally starting* to write and getting competent results in a simple and easy way. Whichever name you choose doesn’t terribly matter, because the Subhead will do the work.

Thus, the course name can be:

– (Happy Writer’s…)
– Action Writing Mini-Course
– FastTrack To Writing Success
– Easy Start Writing Mini-Course
– Instant Expert Writing Primer
– Confident Writer Mini-Course

And the Subhead:

“Celebrated Work From Home Writer reveals you her PROVEN step-by-step writing formula
And walks you by-the-hand through SIX of the most common (and well paid!) online writing projects
That teach you EVERYTHING you ever need to know to put her secrets into action
And write with confidence and skill like you’ve been doing this for years.”

(or for the in-house list promotion):

“I personally walk you through my ‘Simple Step-by-Step Formula’
For handling SIX of the most common (and well paid!) online writing projects
And show you EVERYTHING you ever need to know to write with confidence and skill
So even your first project comes out looking like you’ve been doing this for years.”

So many great ideas here! But I wanna play! How about the phrase at the top of the post, “Get Paid (Well!) to Write”.
