Making Money Writing | Prudence is the Action Hero of the month!
17th February, 2010 - Posted by admin - 1 Comment
Making money writing is not a spectator sport! It requires taking action – sometimes even when it seems like it couldn’t possibly work! : ) Even when it seems like you’ll never find your groove, a way to earn a living doing what you love.
I had the pleasure of hearing from a reader who did just that. This lady took massive action, and got amazing results so quickly that she may now be the record holder for getting her first gig. She sure beat me! : )
And so with much pleasure and pride, I present to you….
February’s Working Writer Happy Writer Action Hero – Prudence!
Hi, My name is Prudence S., from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and I can not speak highly enough of Sue LaPointe’s writing system. I’ve spent the last ten years toiling at various corporate jobs. I hated them so much that I literally job-hopped every two years. I’ve worked in publishing, advertising, food marketing, banking and office supply sales and not one of these jobs ever made me happy or fulfilled. I always dreamed of being my own boss, but I assumed it was out of my reach. It was just easier for me to stay in my boring, stressful, inflexible nine-to-five life than branch out on my own.
The itch to be my own boss kept flaring up and several years ago I went out and bought some books on freelance writing. I read them, took notes, and then never thought about them again. The idea of working for myself just seemed too good to be true, and not one of the books I read told me how to get started. It seemed too overwhelming to try and figure out for myself, so I abandoned the idea.
Then I found Sue LaPointe. I was bored on a snowy Saturday and was lost in web surfing when I found Sue’s book. I don’t know if it was cabin fever or what, but I bought it. When I started reading, I expected it to be like all the other books I’d read on freelance writing. It wasn’t. Her book tells you what to do in order to get your business started from literally nothing. She tells you that you have to work in order to make it happen. Imagine that! Other books assume writers are already working, or they make it seem like all you have to do it wish for gigs and they start rolling in. Sue is realistic. She tells you that in order to get work coming in, you have to put the work in to market yourself, but the work will come.
Something clicked when I read Sue’s system. It just made sense, and since Sue made it happen for herself, I believed everything she said. I got the sense that she genuinely found her calling and she truly wants to help other people to find theirs. So after ten years of hemming and hawing, I took her advice and made myself a portfolio, created a profile online and started bidding on projects. I did just as she told me to and I bid on 5 projects my first day. I didn’t have any expectations, but the next morning when I checked my email, one of my bids had been accepted! And it was for a project that I was actually very passionate about, not something boring or way over my head. I couldn’t believe it. I accepted the offer and bid on 5 more projects. The next day, the same thing happened! It felt like Christmas! I was beyond thrilled, and for the fist time in my life, I actually looked forward to working.
It wasn’t magic. I didn’t wish on a star. I did the work. And the gigs started coming in.
Since that first day, I have bid on 5 projects a day 5 days a week. I don’t get all of my bids, but what I do get is a sense that I am making things happen. Not only that, but the more bids I do, the more I learn about what people want in a freelancer and how to get hired for the next gig. Every morning when I sign on to my computer, I can’t wait to see what is waiting for me. And since I’ve started bidding, there is almost always something in my inbox.
Sue’s system works. She arms you with all of the tools you need not only to get started, but also to keep going. Once you buy her book, the only roadblock is you. Unblock yourself. I did, and I won’t ever look back!
Hats off to you, Prudence! Keep up the great work and thanks for sharing your Action Hero story. You’ve inspired me, and I hope many others will follow your powerful example.
