Earn Money Writing for Local Clients: Reason #2 it’s easy

When I figured out how to earn money writing for local clients earlier this year (thanks to LBMM), my biggest reason for not seeking local clients flew out the window: the fear I’d have to twist arms (then take pity projects).

I had something they want… really, really want.

Either they’ve got websites that are, let’s just say underperforming. (Read: some of the most worthless, expensive real estate ever!) Or, they STILL don’t have an online presence. Worse yet, many of them have sites they don’t even technically own! (BellSouth and Verizon reps are not popular around here – we’ll leave it at that.)

So, while these local clients may not necessarily wake up in the morning thinking about how much they need an article or press release, they DO think about their %$^&*() site (their words, not mine!) and how it’s not doing anything more than taking up cyberspace and racking up a monthly hosting bill.

See, I explain (and they totally get this) that there are two kinds of sites out there:

  1. The “business card” type of website. It’s like, “Yeah, I’m online. Here’s some info. You wanted to know I was online, and I am. You had my name and URL, and you found me.”
  2. The kind of site that makes your phone ring. This is the kind people who are actually looking for a business’ services or products can actually find… without knowing the business’ website or name. For example, (your city) dentists, attorney in (your city), air conditioner repair (your city).

Statistics show that the businesses in the top 3 positions on a Google search like that are like 60% more likely to get clicked… called… and ultimately, hired than those that are on the rest of page #1. (And if you’re not on page #1, you’d better hope your prospective customers are very patient and thorough, because they’re going to have to keep going through page after page of search results to find you.)

The progress is super easy to track. We just look at how much more website traffic they’re getting month to month. (Actually, the client knows before I do, because it’s their phone ringing a LOT more.) For one, we more than doubled his website traffic in two months. Compared with the same time period a year ago, his traffic tripled. Think he’s happy? Think he’s telling friends about this?

It’s a win for everyone:

  • Client’s very happy because he’s getting new business every week.
  • I’m happy because I’ve got an easy, regular, happy client who’s paying me every month to be creative.
  • The writers on my team are happy because they’ve got regular projects.
  • My client’s customers are happy because they found him.
  • My client’s employees are happy because they’re not in danger of losing their jobs.
  • My client’s vendors are happy because if he’s doing well, they’re doing well.
  • Our community benefits by having a glimmer of hope as they see a business flourish.
