Can a freelance writer REALLY network at a ball game?

Now that I’m all into working with local clients to help them dominate the search engines, I may actually leave the house sometimes! (ha ha… okay, actually, yes – I do tend to be somewhat hermit-like.)
So when my hubby showed me a flyer for a networking baseball game – we have the NY Mets minor league team here – I thought, “Well, that’s interesting.” Mind you, yesterday’s temperature was 102 (it doesn’t usually get THAT hot in FL!). And the game is intended for business people.
Of course, the next thought was, “Huh, what do you WEAR to a thing like this???” Shorts and a t-shirt with flip-flops? (my usual uniform… yes, I’m waiting to see Stacey and Clinton of What Not To Wear any day now) Normal networking clothes??
It gets a little more complicated, because right afterward we (my networking friend Veronica) are headed to a women’s networking luncheon. So, it’s going to be a wardrobe challenge.
OK, that’s enough about clothes.
Here’s something cool – yesterday I talked with two prospective local clients. One is a plumber and the other has a service doing novelty party photos (you know, like if you go to a party and leave with a photo of yourself at the Statue of Liberty or something, or on a keychain, or in a snowglobe…). Both have been struggling, and one was just about to give in and pay thousands of dollars for a phone book ad, knowing it wasn’t going to be effective.
GREAT SELLING POINT!!
I’ve never lived anywhere where I had so many phone books! (Actually, let me rephrase… where I’ve recycled so many phone books!) Seems like every other month there’s a new one from a different company.
So, if you’re a business owner looking to advertise… which phone book do you go in? They’re each about $300 a month. There are at least 5-6 here. Go in only one, and you’re not reaching 5/6 of the residents. Go in all, and it gets very hefty very fast.
We chatted about this a bit, and came to a realization: She didn’t need to have more than a line listing in the phone books. Her ideal clients are online, not calling through the book looking for the best deal. Brilliant!!
Have you been watching these videos?? Here’s the last one (I think) before Thursday night’s webinar. (Have you signed up yet???) This one reveals the last easy niche online.
