Why there will never be a shortage of writer jobs

On another of my blogs, I post writer jobs every week – dozens of them.

Someone asked why I’d do that rather than keeping them for myself and I almost split a gut laughing!

See, I’m good and my writing team is great (and fast) but there’s no way on earth we could ever even come close to handling the huge number of writing gigs out there. Just picturing trying to keep up with the demand brings to mind that scene on “I Love Lucy” where Lucy and Ethel worked at the chocolate factory… except in fast-forward.

So, where are all these writer jobs coming from? Why, all of a sudden, is it that writers are highly valuable in the marketplace? I mean, for years, the stereotype of writers included visible ribs, virtual homelessness, big bottles of vodka, and bottomless despair – right?

Or (and I’m reaching way back a few decades to rainy summer afternoons parked in front of cable-less TV), when it comes to commercial writing, Dick Van Dyke working for that advertising agency. I remember more about him falling down than about the actual work he did – but I seem to recall him and his colleagues trapped in a room brainstorming.

Writer jobs have changed a lot – mostly because of the internet.

Anyone who’s got a website needs WORDS for it – and MORE WORDS to get people to go to it. Do you have any idea how many websites are out there?? How many are created every single day?

Your potential client base is unbelievably broad – huge corporations (ick – not my cup of tea… can you say “committee approval”?), internet marketers (a favorite!), mid-sized companies, advertising/marketing agencies, and even local businesses (this one’s got my head absolutely buzzing today!! Thank you, Kevin Wilke and Jeff Peairs!).

You can specialize in so many ways: by type of client, by type of project, by region. You can offer package deals that make your clients’ lives easier because you’re handling everything for them. And best of all, you can help them get what they want – which is a sure recipe for getting what you want!

Oh yes, and you can do this from anywhere, anytime – as long as you’ve got a computer and internet access.

Two or three times a week, when I’m just out and about, I usually get this kind of comment from a complete stranger (plus at least once from my favorite barista): “Wow, you seem like a really happy person” (or some variation of that).

Hmmmm… wonder why?! : )
