So what kind of writing are we talking about here? 

Well, it’s definitely NOT the kind of writing I always pictured writers doing – like novels, screenplays, or magazine articles.

He can’t write worth a lick, so he hires me to write 10 articles a month that he can use to promote his business. We’ve been working together for a couple of years now, and in that time, he’s paid me more than $6,547 to write about how great his golf umbrellas and engraved pencils are! Each article takes me about 15 minutes to write, which puts my hourly rate at about $100! 

Here’s what happens. Each and every month, dozens of people pay me to write little 500 word articles for them – that’s about a single page. I’ve written on every topic from breastfeeding to bodybuilding, but I’m not really an expert in anything. I’m not a journalist, not an English major, not an advertising exec – just a mom with a computer who enjoys reading and writing. Look, I’m a mom. I’m really, really not interested in going to meetings. I don’t own a briefcase. Hey, to be honest, I live in South Florida and my usual "uniform" is flip-flops and shorts.

If this was going to work, I needed a way to find writing clients online.

The other challenge was this: I had NO portfolio. NO samples. And didn’t have a clue how to get any.
